Easy Noi upma recipe, broken rice upma in electric rice cooker - An easy and short cut version of the south Indian breakfast arisi upma, prepared with broken rice available readymade in stores.

You need just broken rice which is called arisi noi in Tamil at home. Rice rava and broken rice are different only by it's texture.

Rice rava is finer in texture, ground smaller, while broken rice as name insists is just broken grain (each grain into just 3-4)

It gives fluffier results and no worries if it would be burnt at bottom. So, perfect for beginners in cooking as well as bachelors.

Let's see how to make this in electric rice cooker, Instant pot and regular pressure cooker.

Instant pot

  1. Start Instant Pot (IP) in Saute - High. You can set for 10 mins for now.

2. Once hot, add oil and splutter mustard, followed by urad dal, chana dal, asafoetida, chilli and curry leaves.

3. Give it a roast and add measured water and required salt.

4. Now wash noi (broken rice) and completely drain the water.

5. Add to the water in IP. Mix well.

6. Cancel Saute and close lid. Cook in Rice mode.

7. Once done, I give 10 minutes standing time.

8. Open and fluff it. Garnish with grated coconut or coconut oil for flavor.

Serve this super easy noi upma with mixed vegetable sambar or Thengai thogayal.

Electric rice cooker method

  1. Wash the rice and add the required water and salt in the electric rice cooker and mix well.
  2. In stove top, temper with itemsunder the "To Temper" and add to rice cooker.

3. Cook as usual you cook rice in electric rice cooker, once done open and mix well.

  1. Now it's ready!

Pressure cooker method

  1. Heat a small pressure cooker with oil and temper with the items given under 'To temper'.
  2. Add water, salt, washed broken rice and mix well.
  3. Pressure cook for 3 whistles.

Water ratio is just same as you do for your rice. I use 1 cup broken rice and 2 & ½ cup water.

Cup measurements

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Broken rice Noi
  • 2.5 cups Water
  • Salt

To Temper

  • 2 teaspoon Oil I use coconut oil
  • ½ teaspoon Mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Urad dal
  • 2 teaspoon Chana dal
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves

    my MIL prepares this in another way.She uses the usual long rice ,soaks for some time.drains,puts oil and makes noi by using mixer.normally uses pepper instead of red chillies. and for thenga togaiyal,uses tur dal also
