Pros: A highly calorific combination of butter, flour and sugar. Butter supplies
vitamin A (essential for healthy eyes, skin and respiratory tract) and
vitamin D. Sugar provides a fast source of energy. There are rarely any artificial additives.
Cons: Shortbread is a weight watcher's nightmare because it is
extremely high in saturated fat and calories. Saturated fat is the 'bad'
fat which is linked to artery-clogging high cholesterol and heart disease.
One gram of fat contains more than twice the calories as one gram of
protein or carbohydrate and sugar represents very poor nutritional
value for the calories it 'costs'.
