Okay, if you're from Nebraska or Iowa, you're probably familiar with Tastee Inn & Out. Their location in Lincoln, Nebraska, closed in 2013, but the original Sioux City, Iowa Restaurant still stands in full operation. I'm all the way in East Texas, though, so this Recipe for Onion Dip is the closest I'm going to get.

Recipe for Onion Dip (Tastee Inn & Out) (1)

I should probably explain if you aren't familiar with the Tastee restaurant. Tastee is one of the few midwestern establishments that serve loose meat sandwiches. I highly recommend making the Tastee Loose Meat Sandwiches and Deep Fried Onion Chips if you're making this dip.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

This recipe for onion dip may be inspired by Tastee Inn and Out, specifically for the deep-fried onion chips. However, it's perfect for just about anything else, like vegetables, regular chips, etc. It's super easy to make, flavorful, and pretty spot-on to the real thing.

Ingredients

Liquids: Large Curd Cottage Cheese, Sour Cream, and Whole Milk.

Herbs and Spices: Ground Black Pepper, Kosher Salt, Cayenne Pepper, Garlic Salt, Celery Salt, and Onion Soup Mix.

See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Step-by-Step Instructions

This recipe for onion dip is incredibly easy.

In a stand mixer, pour in the cottage cheese and milk. Mix until the cottage cheese has lost its texture and is no longer recognizable.

Lastly, add the remaining ingredients, mix, and refrigerate for about 4 hours to allow the flavors to meld.

Easy as that and Delicious!

Expert Tips

  • I recommend using large curd cottage cheese, so you still have some texture to the dip. Not only does this stay true to the original Tastee Onion Chip Dip, but it adds a lot to the overall presentation.
  • If you prefer to leave the cayenne out, you most certainly can, but it adds an extra layer of flavor that most onion dips don't have.

I worked at Tastee as a teenager! I do not remember the first step of mixing the cottage cheese and milk. I just use a small curd cottage cheese. I made this today and thought my small curd was too chunky and used a potato masher to smash it. The recipes that have circulated in Lincoln just say to mix all together. Our recipe also does not have garlic salt or cayenne, but has Accent and onion salt. Next time I will use onion powder to cut back on the salt. No matter what it is a winner!

Thank you so much! I thought that the cayenne added a spice that I didn't remember, but I really liked it, so I left it in. I appreciate you letting us know and hope that you stick around Chicken Fried Kitchen and check out some more of my recipes!
