The 2024 college football season is one of the most intriguing, heading into a season I’ve seen as a fan of the sport.
College football is simply wildly different and changing rapidly, with this season feeling the impact of some of the most significant changes. The transfer portal continues to completely change the fabric of multiple top-ranked teams, and the expansion of the College Football Playoff creates a ton more opportunities for programs. While I have my worries about the overall direction college football is going, the excitement for this season is no joke.
As the season draws near, ESPN recently released their preseason FPI rankings. Here’s a look at the FPI Top 25 teams and how they stand among the best of the best.

SMU MustangsGregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 9.0
Projected Win/Loss: 8.3-3.9
SMU is flying under the radar since joining the ACC. They can compete for the conference this season with Preston Stone at quarterback.
24
Arizona WildcatsZac BonDurant-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 9.2
Projected Win/Loss: 7.9-4.3
Arizona is my personal dark horse to make a wild run. I’m not saying they’re going to win it all, but they will shock a ton of the college football community this season.
23
Miami HurricanesJasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 9.6
Projected Win/Loss: 8.2-4.0
Cam Ward is likely the best quarterback in the ACC heading into 2024. If he plays like it, the Hurricanes will contend for the conference.
22
Kansas State WildcatsBen Queen-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 10.0
Projected Win/Loss: 8.4-3.9
I’ve seen a lot of talk about Kansas State being a dark horse to make a run this season. They have a clear path to the playoff, but I don’t see the talent to win it all on the roster.
21
Louisville CardinalsBrett Davis-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 10.0
Projected Win/Loss: 7.9-4.3
Jeff Brohm led the Cardinals to the ACC Championship in his first year as the program’s head coach. He’ll look to finish the job this year and make a trip to the College Football Playoff.
20
Florida GatorsDenny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 10.1
Projected Win/Loss: 5.9-6.1
Billy Napier is coaching for his job in 2024, a real make-or-break year. All eyes will be on him and freshman quarterback DJ Lagway to see if he is the real deal.

Auburn TigersMaria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 10.1
Projected Win/Loss: 7.2-4.9
Auburn hasn’t felt relevant in a long time. They have a lot of work to do to get back to it.

USC TrojansCredit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 11.1
Projected Win/Loss: 7.1-5.1
USC is going to have a rough year. I don’t see them competing for anything serious in 2024.

17
Kansas JayhawksDenny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 11.2
Projected Win/Loss: 8.7-3.6
Kansas has a clear path to the College Football Playoff in 2024. Lance Leipold staying with the Jayhawks was huge for them.
16
Ole Miss RebelsChuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 12.0
Projected Win/Loss: 7.9-4.2
Ole Miss has high National Championship odds, which are way higher compared to their rankings here. Either Vegas is wrong, or ESPN.
15
Clemson TigersWinslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 12.2
Projected Win/Loss: 8.5-3.8
Clemson has a high ceiling and a lower floor than many fans would like to admit. Dabo Swinney has a lot to prove heading into this season, even if he shouldn’t have to prove anything at this point in his career.
14
Texas A&M AggiesMaria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 13.6
Projected Win/Loss: 7.6-4.5
Can Mike Elko turn this program around? I cannot wait to see. They have serious recruiting juice and have just been missing the right guy at the helm.

LSU Tigers(Photo by Marianna Massey)
FPI: 14.6
Projected Win/Loss: 7.9-4.2
I’ve been saying all offseason I see LSU as a 4 loss team and FPI is projecting just that. They lost too much on the offensive end, even if the defense will recover.

12
Michigan WolverinesTrevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 14.9
Projected Win/Loss: 8.3-3.9
I don’t see the Wolverines being great in 2024. They’ve just lost too much talent from their National Championship team.

11
Florida State SeminolesMelina Myers-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 15.1
Projected Win/Loss: 8.8-3.6
The highest ranked team in the ACC, Florida State shouldn’t be as strong in 2024 as they were in 2023. I have Clemson ranked higher heading into this season, but not by much.

10
Missouri TigersDenny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 15.4
Projected Win/Loss: 9.0-3.2
Mizzou has so many exciting weapons and a stellar offensive line. Luther Burden III is one of my favorite Heisman candidates this season.
9
Tennessee VolunteersStephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 16.6
Projected Win/Loss: 8.6-3.5
The Vols have an interesting team, with Nico Iamaleava taking over under center. I’m typically one to doubt this program, but they are definitely interesting this season.

8
Oklahoma SoonersMichael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 17.2
Projected Win/Loss: 8.2-3.9
Brent Venables has a huge year in 2024. He needs to prove he can take this program back to the top tier, and the opportunity is there. It feels like a more open year competitively, especially with the 12-team playoff.
7
Notre Dame Fighting IrishMark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 19.0
Projected Win/Loss: 10.1-1.9
Can Notre Dame compete for a National Championship with Riley Leonard at quarterback? He’s a better fit than Sam Hartman was.

6
Penn State Nittany LionsRich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 19.8
Projected Win/Loss: 10.1-2.3
Penn State has a defense that can make a run, but there are many questions surrounding starting quarterback Drew Allar. They’ll be a team to keep a close eye on.

5
Alabama Crimson TideGary Cosby Jr. / USA TODAY NETWORK
FPI: 21.9
Projected Win/Loss: 9.3-3.0
The Crimson Tide is one of the most intriguing teams in college football heading into the 2024 season. A high ceiling with a higher floor than I think some believe.

4
Ohio State BuckeyesVincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 22.2
Projected Win/Loss: 10.2-2.2
From a talent perspective, they may be the best team in the country. I have questions about whether Ryan Day can coach them to a National Championship.

3
Texas LonghornsJerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 22.9
Projected Win/Loss: 10.0-2.4
The Longhorns are in the conversation, which is what college football has been waiting for. I don’t see them winning it all, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say college football is better when Texas is good.

2
Oregon DucksMark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 24.5
Projected Win/Loss: 10.8-1.8
Oregon lands at the No. 2 ranking here, which I assumed would be Ohio State. Dan Lanning’s squad is expected to be a top contender with Dillion Gabriel under center.

1
Georgia BulldogsNathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports
FPI: 26.8
Projected Win/Loss: 10.3-2.1
Georgia is the favorite to win it all right now. There was no question they’d be No. 1 in FPI.
