How do I speak to someone at CBP? ›

Even though you always have the right to remain silent, if you don't answer questions to establish your citizenship, officials may deny you entry to the U.S. or detain you for search and/or questioning. Agents may search any person, the inside of any vehicle, and all passenger belongings.

CBP agents may swipe through your phone or look through the documents on your com- puter. The government also claims the authority to copy the data on your electronic devices.

Call the CBP INFO Center at (877) CBP-5511 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m Eastern time, Monday - Friday. If you are outside the United States, call +1 (202) 325-8000. (Telecommunications device for the hearing impaired: Please dial 7-1-1. The U.S. also has a national 7-1-1 service).

Answer loudly, clearly, and briefly. Don't think for a long time before you answer. Sometimes the questions just require “yes” or “no” as an answer. Also, remember that you should have all necessary documents ready (visa, work permit, birth certificate, etc.)

Your CBP Interview

The CBP officers are authorized to ask you questions about your trip and your personal background, including: Your citizenship. The nature of your trip. Anything you are bringing back to the United States that you did not have when you left.

You have the right to remain silent or tell the agent that you'll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney, no matter your citizenship or immigration status. You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status. You may simply say that you do not wish to answer those questions.

You always have the right to remain silent. Your silence cannot be used against you in court. Be aware that Border Patrol and CBP officers will likely try to force you to talk. If you are detained because of suspicion that you have committed a crime, you have the right to remain silent and contact/speak to an attorney.

You can visit the CBP Web site at www.cbp.gov or call CBP at 1-877-CBP-5511 (1-877-227-5511) Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Eastern Time. You may bring the incorrect Form I-94 and documentation (passport and visa) to any CBP Port of Entry or Deferred Inspection Office.

Call US Customs and Border Protection at 1 (202) 325-8000 or visit their website. Terminal 1 Passengers: CATSA security screening begins at 3:00 am. Passengers can then enter the USCBP hall. USCBP processing takes place from 3:30 am until 9:00 pm.

Travelers may receive an email indicating they have 10 days remaining on their admission into the United States or an email regarding a potential violation. If you receive an email, you may check your admission status at https://I94.cbp.dhs.gov or through the CBP One™ mobile application.
